FYI,

If you use mulch around your house be very careful about buying mulch
this year. Hurricane Rita blew over many trees in New Orleans. These
trees were then turned into mulch. Louisiana is trying to get rid of
tons and tons of this mulch to any state or company who will come and
haul it away. It will probably start showing up in Home Depot and Lowe's
at cheap prices. There's just one huge problem - Formosan Termites will
be the bonus in many of those bags. New Orleans is one of the few areas
in the country were the Formosan Termites has gotten a strong hold and
most of the trees blown down were already badly infested with those
termites. These termites can eat a house in no time at all and we have
no good control against them. Please tell all of your friends that own
homes to avoid using mulch that doesn't state where it came from and or
especially if it came from New Orleans.

I found listing for the Termites on other sites but they are not resistant
to pesticides any more than other regular termites. I would still be
careful abouut buying mulch that is shipped from anywhere as it is so easily
available here. Even here you can find bugs coming in with your firewood
that shouldn't be there. I get my wood from Monument and they're cutting a
lot of diseased trees and shipping it as firewood. The pests are going to
get us one way or another. I just lost a tree to beetles and am trying to
save the other, Blue Spruces. I had no idea the bugs were even in town but
trees all over the place are loosing their needles. If you have any
spruces, treat 'em now even if they're healthy. And water them, this has
been a dry winter for trees especially.
Remember years ago we were being warned about fireants? I found a strange
looking mound of twiggs and dirt in my garden full of ants. I got rid of
them but I've never seen ants like that in this area before. I don't know
what they were.
Thanks for the heads up on snopes, a site like that is needed. I'm like
anyone, sometimes I'll fall for the fantastic tales too. Sometimes I catch
on early like the "Koran 9-11", I knew that was fiction because I'd read the
Koran, what there is of it.
