Durango bar ends defiance of smoking ban, for now
DURANGO, Colo. (AP) -- A bar that had defied the statewide smoking ban that took
effect July 1 is now asking customers to put out their cigarettes, at least for
now.
Orio's Roadhouse packed away its ashtrays Thursday. A bar manager told patrons,
"We're not done putting up a fight with this by any means, but for right now,
our hands are tied," the Durango Herald reported.
Orio's owner Heidi LaCombe was out of town and unavailable for comment, and a
bar manager and a bartender said they could not speak for the business. It was
unclear what the bar would do next.
State law bans smoking at most public indoor places, though cigar bars are
exempt. Violations can result in $200 fines.
Orio's had argued that it was exempt from the ban because more than 5 percent of
its revenue comes from tobacco sales, but District Attorney Craig Westberg sent
a letter to LaCombe on Wednesday advising the bar to comply with the ban.
