Bell the cat. I got some of that string elastic from a sewing department of
a store. Its wound on a card sort of like very thick thread. You may have
to go to a sewing specialty shop. Then I got a bag of "jingle bells" at a
craft store. I cut a length of elastic allowing for the bells to be tied on
and still fit over the cat's head. I tie two, three or more bells to the
elastic, then tie the ends together and slip over the cat's head. Every
move will produce a jingle that will warn birds. If it should get caught in
something, the cat only has to back out of it and it will be left behind so
it is a good idea to have supplies to make several for the season so you can
make replacements. This will save birds from the cats and the cats from the
flu the birds might be carrying.

Nice idea, less birds in the living room. My cat one day was on a roll
and got like 10 birds in just a few hours. Each one he caught he would
bring to me for me to eat, and even if I did eat these birds I would
have been full after about three. Finally had to shut the door because
his sucess rate was pretty good.

I did an act like I ate them and he bought it, he was soo proud.

I don't let him out anymore becuase he also has a pretty good sucess
rate of getting into trouble. He is sometimes dubbed the
terror-of-the-neighborhood!

This is about the only reason I don't like collars is I'm afraid he will
get stuck somewhere, he sometimes needs assistance being detached from
the scratching-post. But the elastic idea makes me reconsider getting or
making a new collar, especially with the bells.
