21 Mary (nee STOCKTON) DOWNEN or DOWNER. Born 7 October 1833
in McDonough Co., Illinois. Died there on27 November 1891. Race: White.
(NOTE: The 1900 Census for McDonough Co., IL lists Henry and
Carrie JANES living
in Eldorado Township, with son Earl and daughter Edith (both
from Henry’s
1st marriage), and their own daughter, Ethel Janes, age 3. It
also lists,
probably incorrectly, the birth place for Henry’s father and
mother to be
Tennessee and Illinois, respectively. The marriage record for
Henry and
Carrie list Henry's parents as "Joseph JONES" and "Mary
STOCKTON", but
no additional information was given about them in the record
itself. Further
research located a Mary STOCKTON in Eldorado Township in McDonough
Co., IL who married Job DOWNEN/DOWNER there in 1849. In the 1860
census, Mary (STOCKTON) DOWNEN/DOWNER is shown as either widowed
or divorced head of household. Illinois marriage records list a
Mrs. Mary
DOWNER marrying Joseph Janes in October, 1861 (almost one year
before
the birth of Henry Elmer JANES. In the 1870 and 1880 censuses for
Eldorado Township, Mary is still listed under the name "DOWDEN".
Her son
Henry Elbert (JANES), born about 1863, is also shown with a
surname of
"DOWNEN" . He eventually assumed the surname of his father, Joseph
JANES. Other than the two marriage record entries, no
information could be
found regarding Joseph JANES, nor could it be determined why
Mary reverted
to the DOWNEN/DOWNER surname after her marriage to Joseph
JANES apparently ended.
Mary STOCKTON was the daughter of Daniel and
Elizabeth (FRANKLIN)
STOCKTON, early settlers in McDonough Co., IL who originally
came from
Kentucky.)
OBITUARY OF MARY E. DOWNEN
Died--Nov 27, 1891, at her home in Eldorado township, Mary E.
Downen, aged 58 years, 1 month and 20 days. Mary E. Stockton was born at
the home of her parents in Industry township McDonough Co., Ill.,
October 7, 1833. She was married to Job Downen, April 5th 1849. To them
three children were born, Jane, who married Andrew Hills, now deceased,
Ellen, wife of T.B. Pennington, of Macomb, and Rachel, wife of Wm.
Thomas of Macomb. Job Downen died Nov 5, 1855. Mrs. Downen again married
Oct. 3rd, 1861, to Joseph Janes. To them one son was born, Elmer, who
now resides on the old homestead, where she had lived over 36 years. She
professed religion and united with the Baptist church near Industry in
the year 1850. The funeral services were conducted by J.E. Roach at the
church at Pennington's Point, and the remains were interred in the
cemetery at that place. Her mother, father, two sisters, and a brother

no entry for Frances to indicate her race (the column was left

Dec 1838 in Franklin/Williamson Co., IL. Buried in Big Muddy River

TEASLEY, in Wilkes Co., GA. Race: White
NOTES: Research done by many genealogists regarding Joshua TYNER's
ancestry have provided more questions than answers. Most researchers
list Richard and Eliza Jane TYNER as Joshua's parents. Richard TYNER is
thought by most to be descended from English ancestors who lived in Isle
of Wight, Virginia and Chowan Co., North Carolina long before the
Revolutionary War. No surname has been found for Eliza Jane, who Richard
married circa 1762. Some researchers have claimed that while Eliza Jane
was indeed Joshua's mother, his father was a Cherokee chief, but this
cannot be substantiated in any records. One researcher, W. Randy Haynes,
who is also a descendant of Richard TYNER, suggests that Richard himself
may have been part Indian because of his close association with the
Cherokees. Richard Tyner’s Last Will and Testament specifically mentions
Joshua as his son. Other records clearly refer to a raid that took place
in either 1778 or 1779 on the TYNER homestead by either Creek or
Cherokee Indians. The raid took place while Richard TYNER was away from
home fighting in the Revolutionary War. According to this account,
Richard’s wife Eliza Jane and one daughter were murdered by the Indians.
Two other daughters were kidnapped but later recovered. During the raid,
Joshua and his brother Noah hid in trees, avoiding capture. After this
episode, Richard TYNER married Agnes "Snookie" Daugherty, who reputedly
was a Cherokee Indian herself. If this is correct, she would not be in
the direct genealogical line but could have provided Indian influence on
her stepchildren, including Joshua TYNER.
Revolutionary War pension records state that in the 1780’s, Joshua TYNER
volunteered to be an Indian fighter on the western frontier.
Documents show that Joshua left Georgia about 1806, settling first in
Tennessee, then later (about1817) in Illinois where he lived the rest of
his life in what would become Williamson County. Some local stories
there suggest that in his later years, Joshua went to live with the
Indians of the area, and when he died in 1838, he was buried near Big
Muddy Creek "indian-style". The 1830 Census for Franklin Co., IL lists
Joshua and his family as “Free White Persons”, but this does not fully
answer the question as to whether or not Joshua may have had some Indian
lineage.
While research can neither prove nor disprove Joshua TYNER's Indian
bloodline, it is fairly certain that he was at the most 1/2 Indian, not
full-blooded Indian.
MORE NOTES: Another name which has been mentioned regarding Ward
Churchill's ancestry is that of Reuben TYNER. Reuben, according to
several other geneaologists, was born in NC in 1794, and died in 1867 in
Wauhillau, Indian Territory (Oklahoma). He was the son of Dempsey and
Obedience (SEVIER) TYNER. Dempsey TYNER is identified by some of these
genealogists as the brother of Richard TYNER, Joshua's father, which
would have made him Joshua's first cousin if correct. Reuben lived among
the Cherokee Nation in eastern Tennessee, marrying and raising a portion
of his family there. The family then moved to Indian Territory
(Oklahoma), quite possibly as a part of the forced "Trail of Tears"
Cherokee migration. Reuben and his entire family remained there until
their deaths.
111 Winifred "Teasby" TEASLEY. Born 4 Dec 1775 in Bute Co.,
North Carolina. Died 27 Mar 1842 in Williamson Co., IL. Buried in Wilson
Cemetery, Cambria, Williamson Co., Illinois.
(NOTE: About 1805, Joshua and Winifred left NC and settled temporarily
in Montgomery Co., TN. Later, about 1818, they further migrated to
Franklin Co., IL. In 1839, that portion of Franklin Co., IL where the
NORTH and TYNER families resided became a part of Williamson Co.)

(NOTES: The genealogical information for Richard TYNER is very
sketchy, with many varing opinions among many researchers. In general,
researchers seem to agree that he was a descendant of Nicholas TYNER who
lived first in Isle of Wight, VA, then later in North Carolina. From
there his ancestry becomes unclear and unverifiable, but the names John
HARRIS and Sarah TYNER are frequently mentioned as part of his lineage.
Apparently, there was a Sarah TYNER who was a mistress of John HARRIS,
but there is wide disagreement regarding whether or not Sarah was the
daughter of Nicholas TYNER or a Cherokee woman from a band with which
John HARRIS frequently traded.
Eliza Jane (unknown) was one of two or three wives of Richard
TYNER, and was claimed to be murdered and scalped during an Indian raid
