Well Water!

All summer we have put up with construction, first curbs, then they went
back and put in "new" water pipes, tearing up the whole road. We
understood, or it was implied we would be continuing with the same water as
always. But last water bill, I learned we are now receiving WELL water.
It is horrible stuff and tastes awful. It is from "Pinello" wells,
something I have never heard of, and know nothing about. Is it safe? We
don't know. Did we get a choice? No way. I live on the southwest side
right up against the mountains and instead of mountain water that I can
trust I'm arbitrarily receiving well water I know nothing about at all.

Here, peruse the ful article online...

Colorado Springs Utilities plans to use 1 million gallons of well water
a day to help mitigate the effects of a five-year drought.

After a disappointing runoff in the mountain basins that supply 97
percent of Colorado Springs' water, the total storage in the city's
system of reservoirs is at 62 percent of capacity.

The water will be drawn from what are called the Pinello wells, located
near U.S. Highway 24 and Interstate 25. The wells tap into the alluvium
of Fountain Creek....

Utility officials say the well water meets all drinking water standards,
but it contains more minerals and may have a slightly different taste.

"We've put the wells online in the past, and residents have noticed,"
said Cortney Brand, a senior project engineer with the utility.

No violations occurred in 2002. The state has issued Springs Utilities
waivers for asbestos, cyanide, dioxin, glyphosate, nitrite, and all
unregulated inorganic contaminants.

This was also explained in the newsletter included with Utility bills.
These are available at <http://www.csu.org/about/news/newsletter/>. The
August newsletter contains this:

Pinello, Woodmen wells tapped for additional water supply

In the middle of July, we began feeding one million gallons of water a
day from the Pinello wells into our supply system.

"About 97 percent of our water supply is fresh Rocky Mountain
snowmelt," said Kevin Lusk, senior project engineer. "The three percent
of our supply that comes from well water meets all drinking water
standards, and it has different characteristics than the surface water."

The well water contains more minerals and may have a slightly different
taste. The following parts of Colorado Springs will receive water from
the Pinello wells:
Eastern and southern portions of zip code 80906
Southwestern portion of zip code 80916
Southern portion of zip code 80910

We are also delivering groundwater from our Woodmen wells in the
northern part of the city. These wells currently produce about 250,000
gallons per day, and upgrades to the system later this year will add
another 1.2 million gallons per day to the system.

The use of the groundwater systems is helping to mitigate some of the
effects of the severe fi ve-year drought the region is experiencing.
Total systemwide storage is now at about 62 percent of capacity.

Back when I did it, it was done through double blind email and the
best ones got posted to USENET. I'm not sure my name ever showed up
anywhere on them even though a couple did get posted in the digests.
I'll go poke around the website and see what I can find.
